Core Team Issues
St. Andrew/Providence Mission Clinic Partnership
Utilizing the training from MACG leadership institutes, St. Andrew core team leaders have established an innovative partnership with the North Portland Providence Mission Clinic which is providing primary care services to people without insurance in St. Andrew parish. We believe this is a terrific example of the imaginative thinking we need in our mediating institutions to tackle the paralysis many of us feel in the face of our dysfunctional health system.*
Traffic light at NW 8th and West Burnside
Congratulations to the Central City Concern core team! The group has been working on safety improvements in the Northwest 8th Ave. and Burnside areas and as a direct result of an organized action campaign with the City by CCC employees and clients in 2007, this month the City is making the following improvements to this intersection using City transportation funds:
- Curb extensions
- Advance stop bars with "stop here for pedestrian crossing signs",
- Solar powered warning beacons activated by pedestrian push buttons, and
- Improved street lighting at the crosswalk (already done)
This will make the crosswalk, which many hundreds of CCC employees, residents, clients, and others use each day, much safer.
PHOENIX RISING Transitions (PRT) Prison In-Reach
Leaders from PHOENIX have designed, and with the participation of MACG teachers have been teaching leadership institutes, modeled on local MACG institutes, inside Columbia River Correctional Institute since 2003.
Their work is starting to receive the recognition it deserves from public officials and PRT is negotiating a formal partnership with Multnomah County Department of Corrections.
PHOENIX RISING Transitions' Inner Core Team recently invited one Leader from each MACG Member Institution to visit and share with them in Relational Meetings at the Columbia River Correctional Institution (CRCI). The men requested these RMs to discover what pressures were pushing, what shared self-interests existed, what actions were brewing, and what issues they could support upon their release from prison. Five MACG Leaders accepted that invitation, and on April 16th they joined PHOENIX Leaders for "An Evening of Relational Meetings w/ MACG Leaders."
